Curriculum and Assessment Information

We believe that school is a place where children enjoy the challenge of learning. For our school community to thrive and grow we provide a stimulating and supportive environment that encourages all individuals to use their abilities to the full. Our school develops the whole child, academically, socially and spiritually, to enable them to progress with confidence. This all occurs within the framework of our Christian ethos which underpins and identifies our school as a Church of England School.

We have a well-developed Teaching and Learning Policy which overarches all of our curriculum policies.

Literacy

  • We support our literacy teaching by interpreting the revised framework of the National Curriculum. We are keen to use any quality materials which will strengthen the teaching and learning in our school. We explore ways of developing literacy skills through all of the other curriculum areas.
  • Children in Foundation Stage and KS1 receive a daily Phonics lesson and this is structured by Letters and Sounds. We use many reading schemes but predominately books are used from the Oxford Reading Tree.
  • We use targets to focus development in identified areas of Literacy and progress is monitored in termly target setting and Pupil Progress Meetings (PPM).

Numeracy

  • We support our Numeracy teaching by interpreting the revised framework of the National Curriculum.

Science

  • In all classes the science curriculum is planned on a 1 or 2 year rolling programme of topic areas. The relevant key science skills for each year group are delivered through topics.
  • The science skills for AT1 for each relevant year group are taught through these topic areas. There are 6 to cover in each year.
  • Year 6 revise all areas to ensure that they are familiar with each topic in preparation for end of Key Stage Assessments.

ICT/ Computing

All ICT in the school is planned and delivered by our class teachers. This is monitored by the ICT co-ordinator. It is a curriculum that is designed to link with other curriculum areas whilst developing the discreet ICT skills needed.

National Curriculum Foundation Subjects

For all of our Foundation Subjects, we have developed a two year rolling programme based on the National Curriculum Requirements.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Our Foundation Stage Curriculum is directed by guidance in the Early Years Foundation Stage Documentation. It covers the 3 prime and 4 specific areas of learning which are Communication and language development, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional development, Literacy, Mathematical, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Religious Education

For our RE teaching we follow the Lincolnshire agreed syllabus. The areas of delivery are allocated to year group in a 2 year programme to ensure that children experience the full RE syllabus.

Collective Worship

There is a statutory requirement for all Voluntary Controlled schools to have a form of Collective Worship each day. Our Collective Worship policy is written with guidance from the Diocese Board of Education.

PSHE

The school has adopted SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning) as our framework for delivering PSHE. This is progressive across each year group and the learning is built on year on year.

Sex Education

We follow our sex education policy which has been set up in accordance with county and national support information.

Drugs Education

The School has a scheme of work for the delivery of Drugs education that is cross-curricular.

Special Educational Needs

The curriculum is planned through a whole school approach to curriculum planning, taking into account progression and differentiation. The work for some children is supported by Basic Entitlement and IEPs which teachers use as part of their daily planning.

Focus Weeks

Some aspects of the curriculum are delivered through focus weeks and days. The timetable is suspended and activities are focussed on a key theme.

Curriculum enhancement

The curriculum is enhanced by using visits and speakers whenever possible. We aim that each class should have one of these enhanced opportunities each half term.

Each year there is the opportunity for the children to enjoy some form of theatre experience.

Children in Key Stage 2 are taught French each week and it is built into curriculum areas in Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage.

There are opportunities for the children to take responsibilities within their class and the whole school. Each class has a group of children who have monitor roles and across the whole school children can be School Councillors, House Captains, Playground Playmates, Peer Mediators or School Sacristans depending on their year group.

Children can learn clarinet, saxophone, cornet, flute or recorder during the school day via the Music for School Foundation peripatetic music service. In addition we ensure that every child has the opportunity to access whole class music tuition for a minimum of one term.

Extended School opportunities

The school offers a variety of clubs for children to participate in after school. These include Football, Multi-skills, Cricket, Rounders, Dance, Drama, Tag Rugby, Gardening and Choir.
